Key considerations

When shipping between the UK and Europe there are key considerations that must be fully checked and actioned as required. UPN IT systems and paperwork support are fully compliant for application within any external systems.

Prepare a commercial invoice

Every shipment between GB and Northern Ireland/Europe needs a commercial invoice with information for customs authorities. Please click this link below for what needs to be done –

Customs clearance

It should be noted that there will be costs for the Export and Import customs clearance declarations.

Your customers who elect to use UPN member partners for European shipments will need to complete authorisation forms for each partner member that they intend to use ahead of any shipments after 1st January 2021


Euro Channel logistics:

NB – “Deliveries travelling to Amazon DC’s in France will only be accepted under DDP IncoTerms. Amazon are unwilling to pay any import duties/VAT and therefore the responsibility must lie with the Exporter to pay these charges in Euros to ‘ECL’ at the time the consignment is manifested to ensure delivery”

UPN have now agreed customs clearance charges with our European partner depots as follows:

Export Declarations –
£35.00 per clearance for up to 2 commodity codes. Further codes will be charged at £2.50 per code. The exception to this is D14 – Euro Channel Logistics who cover France as they charge £5.00 per additional commodity code after the first 5 codes.

Import Declarations –
£45.00 per clearance for up to 2 commodity codes. Further codes will be charged at £2.50 per code. The exception to this is those countries covered by depot 12 – DSV where the import clearance will be charged at £55.00 for 2 codes and £2.50 for additional codes and D14 – Euro Channel Logistics who cover France and charge £82.50 for up to 5 commodity codes and £9.00 per additional commodity code.

In addition to the Export and Import clearance charges, D14 – Euro Channel Logistics also charge £50 per consignment to cover GVMS administration.

TAN Charges: Republic of Ireland shipments. A charge of 2% of the duty cost (minimum £10) is levied by TOGA for use of their own TAN (Deferment Account).

Channel Islands: Import charges from the CI’s are £45 and these are raised by D96.

Export charges to the CI’s only apply if there is a requirement under the terms of shipment to raise T forms. When this is applicable a charge of £57 is raised to produce the T form on the mainland and a further charge of £57 to clear the goods at the destination port.

Packing materials

Wood packaging material (WPM) is known to introduce harmful tree and forestry pests and diseases. If you import or export any goods using WPM or supply WPM to businesses, you need to follow the rules to meet ISPM15 international standards from 1 January 2021.

This is so you can move them between Great Britain (GB), England, Scotland, Wales and other countries including EU member states and Switzerland.

Wood packaging material (WPM) includes – packing cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar containers, pallets, box pallets, pallet collars and other load boards, dunnage (loose wood used to protect goods and their packaging)

The rules do not apply to processed, non-solid WPM like plywood, raw wood that’s 6mm thick or less, barrels for wines and spirits or gift boxes made from processed wood, sawdust, shavings, or cardboard (as packing material).

Northern Ireland procedures

Import of products, animals, food, and feed system (IPAFFS). IPAFFS is the domestic system for the import of live animals, animal products and high-risk food and feed not of animal origin into Great Britain.
